Stanford football: More rough road ahead for Cardinal

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:09:06 GMT

STANFORD – Through seven weeks, Stanford has established a clear pattern. The Cardinal is competitive against unranked and FCS teams, with four games decided by an average of six points. But in three games against ranked teams, the closest margin has been 35 points. That doesn’t bode well for the Cardinal (2-5) with No. 5 Washington next up Saturday at Stanford Stadium (4 p.m., FS1). Also still to come are No. 11 Oregon State and No. 14 Notre Dame.“Our guys know we play a tough schedule,” Stanford coach Troy Taylor said. “That’s what makes it so rewarding if you do play well and you win a game. But yeah, we’ll lick our wounds and we will be ready to compete and get back after it. We’re excited to have an opportunity to play against one of the top teams in the country.”Stanford lost 42-7 Saturday night against No. 23 UCLA (5-2), the closest it has come to a ranked opponent this season. The Cardinal lost 56-10 at No. 24 USC and 42-6 at home to No. 8 Oregon. That compu...

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is drifting Monday, continuing a monthslong run where it’s slavishly followed the cue of the bond market. The S&P 500 was 0.2% lower in morning trading, coming off its worst week in a month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 90 points, or 0.3%, as of 10:33 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.1% lower.Rapidly rising yields in the bond market have been knocking stock prices lower since the summer, and Treasury yields were swinging. Early Monday morning, the yield on the 10-year Treasury briefly topped 5.02% to touch its highest level since 2007. That helped drive the S&P 500 to an early loss of 0.8%.But the 10-year yield then eased back to 4.92%, compared with 4.91% late Friday, which helped stocks to recover their early losses. The S&P 500 briefly flipped to a small gain when the 10-year yield fell back to 4.90%. As the centerpiece of the global financial system, Treasury yields help dictate how much investors pay for...
