The Denver police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man during an alleged domestic violence incident earlier this month believed the man was armed with a knife, but he was actually holding only a black marker, according to body-worn camera footage released Monday. The shooting happened Aug. 5 just before 8 p.m. in the 2300 block of West Cedar Avenue. The graphic body-worn camera footage shows Brandon Cole, 36, held a black marker in his hand and raised the marker to chest-level as he charged at a police officer that night. The officer, who has not been publicly identified, shot Cole twice. The body-worn camera footage shows an uninvolved woman and young child were standing directly behind Cole when the officer opened fire. Cole was killed; no one else was injured.“This is a tremendous tragedy,” Chief Ron Thomas said during a news conference Monday in which police offered the most detailed account to date of the killing. The incident began at 7:56 p.m., when a neighbor called 911 t...Nearing rehab assignment, Mitch Haniger says time away from SF Giants has been ‘difficult’, ‘frustrating’

SAN FRANCISCO — One of the draws for Mitch Haniger when he signed with the Giants this past winter was the chance to play for his hometown team. One problem: Four months into his tenure, he hasn’t played very much. That should change soon, as Haniger said Tuesday the goal is to begin a rehab assignment next week. He won’t accompany the team on its upcoming six-game swing to the East Coast, but could be ready to play his first game since June 13 not long after they get back.Haniger spoke to the Bay Area News Group after taking live batting practice on the field for a second straight day, exactly nine weeks after he was hit in the forearm with an errant Jack Flaherty fastball, derailing his time with the Giants before it got a chance to get started.“It’s definitely difficult,” Haniger said of his time away. “I don’t like spending time on the IL and being hurt. You feel like you’re not able to do your job and perform for your teammates. The goal here is to w...Kurtenbach: The 49ers aren’t worried about Nick Bosa’s holdout. They should be

SANTA CLARA — We all know how this ends for Nick Bosa and the 49ers: The team’s best player and the league’s best pass rusher will sign a new contract that makes him the NFL’s highest-paid non-quarterback.Big press conference, big smiles, big money. So let’s get on with it.What’s the hold-up with ending the holdout? The 49ers are practicing hard. They’re not terribly far away from beginning to game-plan for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1.But Bosa is 3,000 miles away, and there’s no expectation that he will hop on a plane to San Jose anytime soon. The Niners are downplaying it all. But not giving Bosa his big deal is, well, a big deal, because there’s no guarantee this holdout ends before the regular-season starts.Related ArticlesSan Francisco 49ers | Editorial: California should ban tackle football in high school San Francisco 49ers | 49ers training camp: Talanoa Hufanga’s interception spoils Brock Purd...Leaving California: Where do ‘best state’ rankings tell you to move?

Departing Californians take a lot of pride in their new home state.I know this because my “Leaving California” columns – designed to help folks choose which state might be best for a relocation – draw spirited comments from readers on how their relocation selection was slighted by my rankings.Yes, the trusty spreadsheet isn’t free of bias in various forms. But there are 49 other states. Some will grade higher than others. That’s the scorecard business. But to get past my personal blind spots, this edition of “Leaving California” scores relocation options for Californians on a simple scale – the average ranking derived from nine other “best state” scorecards. These gradings are based on a host of economic and demographic factors, each with its own wisdom – or not – backing the math.If we assume that such “best state” scorecards are valuable tools for home hunting, the average ranking says New Hampshire is your top spot. Then comes Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Minnesota. By t...San Jose State football: Jenkins twins two of a kind in Spartans defense

Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos got a new ADA-compliant boat ramp installed this summer, ensuring that residents of all abilities can enjoy the lake.Florida-based AccuDock installed the dock, which consists of a kayak loading zone and a marina boat loading zone. The docks are wider to make it easier to navigate with a wheelchair and have edge guards that serve as bumpers to prevent anything from rolling over the edge of the dock. The ADA-compliant dock is the first of its kind at Vasona, and Tamara Clark of the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department said it’s part of the county’s efforts to expand ADA accessibility across its water parks.“It’s just a really fabulous thing to have happen to see the expansion of recreation to other communities,” Clark said. “It’s been fabulous; one of the best things I’ve ever seen in my career here at parks is the expansion of boating to an entirely new community.”Santa Clara County hosted a ribbon-cuttin...Broadmoor Police Department faces potential dissolution
