Michelle Obama lobbied for healthy school meals. Her new nutritional drinks wouldn’t qualify

By Deena Shanker | BloombergPublic health advocates have long lauded Michelle Obama for her efforts to make American food healthier — especially for kids. From her perch in the White House, she led efforts to update school nutrition standards, modernize labelling on packaged foods, persuade kids to eat more fruits and vegetables, and increase their consumption of water. She even encouraged the food industry to curb the marketing of unhealthy products to children. Now a co-founder and strategic partner at Plezi Nutrition, a maker of sweetened beverages for kids ages 6 and up, Obama says she’s offering a lower-sugar alternative to steer them away from sugary drinks. The overconsumption of such beverages among children can lead to higher risks for maladies including heart disease, diabetes, tooth decay, obesity and headaches. As soon as “most kids get to school age, drinking only water and milk just isn’t a reality,” Obama said at a Wall Street Journal conference earlier this month. “We’...

Families of men shot by California cops lose faith in new accountability law as reviews drag on

TEHACHAPI – Three men in dark suits knocked on Pam Holland’s door one night last June. They told her that her son was dead, shot to death in a neighboring county by a sheriff’s deputy. The shooting, they said, was being investigated under a new California law that requires the state Justice Department step in when a police officer kills an unarmed person.Pam Holland hoped the investigation would be quick and fair. Her father had been a Kern County Sheriff’s reserve deputy. She grew up around cops. She thought she could trust them — but she also believed that police agencies protect their own.“I was like, wow, that’s awesome, this is great, they’re going to take it out of the hands of the local cops, who would instantly feel anger toward my son without even knowing anything,” she said. But an investigation that the Justice Department officers told Holland would take eight months is quickly approaching 12. Now, she is among several Californians whose family members were killed by the p...

Arnold Schwarzenegger in “The Terminator” – the 1984 science fiction movie that cemented the actor’s status as a box office juggernaut – is about as iconic as it gets, but it turns out one of the most memorable moments in the film came about by sheer chance. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter published on Tuesday, Schwarzenegger recalled how his line of dialogue in the film in which he utters “I’ll be back” was an “accident,” stemming from a disagreement he had with his director James Cameron.“Jim Cameron and I were debating how to say the line because I was not comfortable with saying ‘I’ll,’” the former California governor reminisced. “I said, ‘I think it’s stronger to say, “I will be back.”’ Cameron said, ‘Are you the scriptwriter now? It’s just one word. Don’t tell me how to write. I don’t tell you how to act.’”Schwarzenegger then remembered how he responded, telling his director that he told him how...
