Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:32:36 GMT

Austin Gomber is a starting pitcher again and he plans to make the most of his regained role. The Rockies’ left-hander, the centerpiece of the Nolan Arenado trade with St. Louis before the 2021 season, was relegated to the bullpen last year in part because of his ineffectiveness as a starter. Colorado manager Bud Black also wanted a lefty reliever when Lucas Gilbreath was injured.“He thinks he’s a starter and I don’t disagree with him at all,” Black told reporters Thursday morning at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Ariz.Thursday afternoon, in Colorado’s 7-1 loss to the Padres, Gomber surrendered two earned runs on seven hits over four innings while striking out two and walking one. That’s not a great line, but both Black and Gomber said that Gomber’s stuff was good. Gomber was pleased with how he threw his curveball, a pitch that’s been a little off-kilter this spring as he tweaks his delivery.“I felt like the breaking ball really came ...

Mack Rhoades rolled into Ball Arena waving an olive branch in one hand and an invitation in the other.Ya know, CU Buffs, if this whole Pac-12 TV deal doesn’t stick the landing … call me.“I’ll say what I’ve said before: I don’t think anybody’s rooting for the demise of the Pac-12,” the Baylor athletic director told me with a grin as we chatted outside the Bears’ locker room, where his team is preparing for its NCAA Tournament matchup with 14th-seeded UC Santa Barbara here Friday. “And certainly, our commissioner’s not.”Wait. We’re talking about Brett Yormark, right?THAT Brett Yormark?Coulda fooled me.“I think we’re all rooting that they end up with a media deal that’s really good for the 10 of them,” Rhoades continued, switching from peace mode to hypothetical invitation mode. “But, you know, if it comes to a point in time where that media deal is not in their best interest, then why wouldn’t we be interested in a school, in an institution, like CU?”He smiled.Oh, Bi...

PAJARO — Behind barricades and under the watchful eyes of armed police officers, dozens of frustrated Pajaro families gathered on the Main Street bridge with one question on their minds: “When can we go home?”Desperately trying to convince police officers to let them through to check on pets, grab important documents or simply to see if their homes were flooded, Pajaro residents are growing more and more frustrated as Monterey County officials continue to caution that a return home is not likely for another week, even as floodwaters have receded in the past few days. With no access to homes or jobs and no idea when they’ll be able to start rebuilding, many of the Pajaro residents — who were forced to evacuate after a levee breached in the wee hours of the morning Saturday — are feeling left behind.Rumors that looters could break into damaged homes in the deserted town swirled around shelters and among the panicked crowds gathered on the bridge this...
